We also offer preventive pet care, medical services, in-house diagnostics, nutrition counseling, medical grooming, end-of-life care, additional services such as specialist referrals, and pet travel services for international health certificates. See the full list on our Services page.
Can you help if my pet is having an urgent health issue?
Yes. During our open hours of 8am to 8pm every day, we handle urgent care cases for dogs and cats including vomiting, suspected toxin ingestion, breathing changes, lacerations, urinary issues, and other same-day concerns. Call ahead at (415) 400-5754 when possible so the team can prepare for your arrival. The team triages on arrival and acts on what is most urgent first.
Does Urban Pet Hospital offer dental care for dogs and cats?
Yes, dental care is one of our priority services. We offer comprehensive cleanings under anesthesia, extractions, oral surgery for advanced periodontal disease, digital dental X-rays, and oral health assessments at every wellness visit. Is Urban Pet Hospital accredited or Fear Free certified?
Urban Pet Hospital holds Feline Friendly Practitioner certification, recognizing our team’s training and approach to feline-specific care, handling, and exam techniques. This means cat owners can expect a quieter, more cat-centered visit from carrier to exam room. Call (415) 400-5754 to ask about our team or to schedule a feline-friendly visit.
Payment and Insurance
What payment methods does Urban Pet Hospital accept?
We accept cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and debit cards. Payment is collected at the time of service. For full details, including pricing, insurance, and financing, see our payment options page.
Does Urban Pet Hospital work with pet insurance?
Yes, we accept and work with many major pet insurance providers. We also offer direct billing for one provider, which means eligible clients pay only their portion at checkout rather than waiting for reimbursement. Bring your insurance information to your visit so our team can help process your claim.
Do you offer payment plans or financing?
Yes. We offer flexible, third-party financing options for clients who want to spread out the cost of care over time, especially for larger surgical procedures or dental days. The application is straightforward and can be completed before or at the time of your visit. Call (415) 400-5754 to ask about financing for an upcoming appointment.
Do you provide an estimate before starting care?
Yes, every plan of care comes with a clear estimate before treatment begins, and our team walks you through the cost line by line so there are no surprises at checkout. Pricing for many of our common services is also published on our payment options page for transparency. Call (415) 400-5754 with cost-specific questions.
Preventive Care
How often should my pet have a wellness exam?
Healthy adult dogs and cats benefit from a wellness exam at least once a year. Puppies and kittens need more frequent visits in their first year for the vaccine series, and senior dogs (over 7) and senior cats (over 9) do best with twice-yearly exams to catch age-related changes early. Call (415) 400-5754 to schedule your pet’s next wellness visit at Urban Pet Hospital in San Francisco.
What vaccines does my pet need in San Francisco?
Core vaccines for dogs include rabies, distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. Core vaccines for cats include rabies and FVRCP. Lifestyle vaccines such as leptospirosis, bordetella, and feline leukemia are recommended based on your pet’s specific risk and lifestyle, and the veterinarian will assess that at the first visit. Call (415) 400-5754 to book a vaccine appointment.
How do I protect my pet from parasites in San Francisco?
San Francisco’s mild, year-round climate means fleas and ticks are not a seasonal worry, they are a year-round one. We recommend continuous parasite prevention for every dog and cat, along with annual fecal testing and routine deworming. The Bay Area also saw a surge of leptospirosis cases in 2026 following heavy winter rains, so any dog visiting parks or beaches should be considered for the leptospirosis vaccine.
After Hours and Emergencies
What should I do if my pet has an urgent care outside your hours?
For the eight hours we are closed each night, the nearest 24-hour urgent care veterinary hospital is the right call. Call them on the way so the staff can be ready. Once your pet is stable, our team picks up continuing care the next morning. Call us at (415) 400-5754 during clinic hours for follow-up.
What counts as a veterinary urgent care?
True emergencies include difficulty breathing or open-mouth breathing in a cat, collapse or sudden weakness, seizure activity, suspected ingestion of a toxic food or substance, inability to urinate (especially in male cats), severe bleeding that does not stop with pressure, major trauma, and pale or bluish gums. Call Urban Pet Hospital at (415) 400-5754 immediately if you see any of these during our 8am to 8pm hours. Time matters in every one of these situations.
